Nenad Vasilić
Musician
Nenad Vasilić is a prominent Austrian-Serbian jazz artist – double bass player and composer, who has been present on the European music scene for more than 25 years. Vasilić performs his original compositions, inspired by Balkan rhythms, jazz and classical music, with great success in various ensembles – from a duo to a sextet, as well as in solo performances. Vasilić recorded 13 albums under his own name, in different formations.
In 2014, he was appointed as an ambassador for integration at the Austrian chancellor’s cabinet, and in 2018 as a creative ambassador of the Serbia creates platform, within the project of the Council for Creative Industries of the Government of the Republic of Serbia. With the support of this project, he marked two decades of professional activity in Austria by publishing the sheet music book Songbook – 33 Original Compositions. In 2017, World Music Association of Serbia gave him the highest recognition: Vojin Mališa Draškoci award. In April 2020, Nenad Vasilić was appointed as a full-time professor and the head of the double bass department at the Berlin Jazz Institute (Universität der Künste Berlin).
The music he creates is in constant interaction with the audience, since he has over 80 performances a year, on concert stages, festivals and in clubs throughout Europe.
With nearly 40 original compositions on 13 albums, Vasilić uniquely fuses jazz, improvisation and world music, making it his own. In 2004, his album Nenad Vasilić Balkan Band Live in ORF was nominated for the Hans Koller Prize.
His pieces, simultaneously innovative and respectful of the musical traditions that made him what he is today, exude a lightness and virtuous understanding of the complexity of the Balkan rhythms and melodies. By now, this groundbreaking Vienna-based musician has left a gentle yet permanent mark on the European world music and jazz scene and, as an arranger and producer, is constantly remapping his personal and musical boundaries.
