Nikolaj Nikitin
Musician
Nikolaj Nikitin is among the most influential saxophonists and composers of Slovakian modern jazz. His style is characterized by a unique sound, an original approach to composition, and an execution that often brings together the world of jazz, classical music, and other genres. In 2012 and 2013, he released three original albums with Slovakian jazz legends: pianist Gabriel Jonáš, double bass player Juraj Griglák, and drummer Jozef Döme. They were later joined by trumpet player Patches Stewart. In 2014, he worked on a double album, Janáček, Tales from my Diary, in collaboration with the band Polajka and double bass player Miroslav Vitouš. Their album was nominated for several high-profile music awards. Starting from 2017, he released records under the stage name Altar, with Ľuboš Šrámek: Altar (2017), Altar Quintet (2020), and Altar Quartets (2021). In 2023, he launched the album Normal, in which he explores what is normal in various aspects of life and music, and how these aspects can stray from conventions. Nikolaj Nikitin is the CEO of the International Dodo Šošoka Jazz Workshop and head of the record label HLAVA XXII.
