Istituto Polacco Roma
Institute for Public and Cultural Diplomacy
The Polish Institute of Rome, founded in 1992, is an institution of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for public and cultural diplomacy whose mission is spreading Polish history and culture while also promoting the dialogue between Poland and Italy in the field of culture, education, research, and social life. The Institute organizes art and film exhibitions, conferences, meetings, shows and concerts. Over the past few years, the Polish Institute has provided the Italian public with several meet-and-greets with artists, writers, and intellectuals such as Wisława Szymborska, Ryszard Kapuścinski, Adam Michnik, Sławomir Mrożek, Tomasz Stańko, Leszek Możdżer, Rafał Blechacz, Marcel Łoziński, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Krzysztof Zanussi, Andrzej Żulawski, Józef Robakowski, Mirosław Bałka, Katarzyna Kozyra, Wilhelm Sasnal. Each year, in close collaboration with Rome cultural institutions, the Institute organizes “Corso Polonia”, the festival centered on Polish culture. It also promotes other important ventures related to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the Day of Dialogue, as well as CiakPolonia, a Polish-themed film festival. The Institute also operates in the publishing industry, through the cooperation with Italian publishers interested in Polish literature. Consequently, it is increasingly easier to find modern classics and juvenile fiction in bookshops, ranging from Zbigniew Herbert, Witold Gombrowicz and Stanisław Lem, to Marek Krajewski and Olga Tokarczuk. A remarkable achievement of the Institute is the discovery of great Polish authors, less known in Italy until now, such as Julia Hartwig, Tadeusz Różewicz and Kazimierz Moczarski, and other important representatives of the Polish reportage school such as Mariusz Szczygieł, Wojciech Tochman, Wojciech Jagielski, Jacek Hugo Bader. www.istitutopolacco.it
